AMERICANS MOVE to Portugal With Their Dog

by Melissa "Work those glutes" Boyd

Lisbon, Portugal, is experiencing a surge in many Americans moving to the city. With its vibrant culture and beautiful beaches, Portugal is one of the most affordable countries in Europe. It offers many benefits for expatriates, such as generous social security benefits and low taxes, with that in mind. We couldn’t wait to begin our new life!

Welcome to our first video on Tourabunga! This vlog takes you along our journey moving internationally from Las Vegas, United States, to Lisbon, Portugal. The video starts with our efforts in attaining our Portuguese Visas and our nerve-racking wait to receive them. Once we held the good news in our hands, our long-awaited dream of starting a new life in Portugal became a reality.

After years of selling our belongings, we left an empty house with only what we could fit in suitcases. We packed it all in our rental car and began the drive to our dog-friendly hotel in Los Angeles (Residence Inn LAX). We decided not to take a direct flight to Lisbon for the sake of our 12-year-old dog, Willow. Our family felt it was wisest to break up the travel into three days, making it easier for her to fly. We also had to be concerned with the weather. We had to depart from a location that would be under 85 degrees Fahrenheit at departure time.

You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life.

The following day, we flew bright and early from LAX Airport via Alaska Airlines to our hotel in Newark, New Jersey. This trip was Willow’s first-ever cargo hold flight. Though it was not easy for her, Willow was just fine and now prepared with the experience for our next flight to Lisbon.

After a night’s rest at the dog-friendly Courtyard Newark Liberty International Airport hotel, we made our way to the Newark airport for some RT-PCR tests. We were on the late evening flight to Lisbon, Portugal. We flew the shorter route with TAP Airlines.

After landing on the tarmac in Lisbon, the adventure kicks into high gear as we try to collect our dog Willow from the airline. We then navigate our way through customs to ultimately pass out on the bed of our new apartment.

Since filming and moving to Lisbon, Portugal, we have experienced so many of Portugal’s beautiful things to offer. We can’t wait to share more of our adventures with you soon. The people we have met here have been so kind and welcoming. Getting to know this wonderful country better has been such a blast. This vlog is only the tip of the iceberg. We would love it if you stuck around!
